He graduated from Tilden Technical High School in 1954 and later converted to Judaism as an adult, having considered himself Jewish since childhood.

Pinkney served as a hospital corpsman in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1964. He then moved to Puerto Rico and learned how to sail. After returning to the mainland in 1961, Pinkney worked for Revlon and later the Johnson Products Company.

Following his layoff from the Department of Human Services in 1985, he began planning to sail around the world. Pinkney initially intended to circumnavigate via the Panama and Suez canals, but Teddy Seymour became the first African American to solo circumnavigate that route in 1987. Throughout the late 1980s, Pinkney raised funds for his voyage.
