Pinkney served as a hospital corpsman in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1964. He then moved to Puerto Rico and learned how to sail. After returning to the mainland in 1961, Pinkney worked for Revlon and later the Johnson Products Company.

Following his layoff from the Department of Human Services in 1985, he began planning to sail around the world.
