Ram Jethmalani was born on 14th September 1923 in Shikarpur, Bombay Presidency, British India which is current day’s Shikarpur, Sindh in Pakistan. He died on 8th September 2019 aged 95 at his home in New Delhi, India as he was not feeling well.

Ram Jethmalani’s father was Boolchand Gurmukhdas Jethmalani and his mother’s name was Parbati Boolchand. Nothing is available about his siblings. He completed his schooling at the age of 13 and earned a bachelor’s degree in law from Bombay University when he was 17. 

Ram Jethmalani became the youngest lawyer in India at the age of 18. Later, he earned his master’s degree in law from the same Bombay University. He started his legal career as a lawyer and as a professor.

Later, he started his own law firm in Karachi with one of his friends after the partition but fled to India soon after riots broke out in Karachi in February 1948.

Ram Jethmalani fought several high-profile cases as a defense lawyer and defended the scammers Harshad Mehta and Ketan Parekh, L.K. Advani in the Hawala scam, Manu Sharma involved in the Jessica Lall murder case, Mumbai mafia gang leader Haji Mastan, Amit Shah in the Sohrabuddin encounter case, Shiv Sena in Krishna Desai murder case, and Asaram Bapu in the Jodhpur physical assault case, among others. He retired on 9th September 2017.

Ram Jethmalani was also an active politician, he was a member of Parliament of Lok Sabha from 1977 to 1984 and of Rajya Sabha several times between 1988 to 2019. He was the Minister of Urban Development from March 1988 to March 1999 and served as the Minister of Law and Justice from May 1996 to June 1996 and from June 1999 to July 2000.

Ram Jethmalani also wrote several books such as “Big Egos, Small Men”, “Conflict of Laws”, “Justice: Soviet Style”, etc., and was the highlight of two biographies written on him named “Ram Jethmalani: The Authorized Biography” written by Nalini Gera, and “Rebel: A Biography of Ram Jethmalani” written by Susan Adelman.

Ram Jethmalani married two women, his first wife was Durga with whom he got married in 1941 at the age of 18. He had three children with her, a son named Mahesh, and two daughters named Rani and Shobha.

Later, before the partition in 1947, he married for the second time Ratna Shahani who was a lawyer. They had a son named Janak. Jethmalani never divorced his first wife to marry the second one, instead, all of them were part of his family.
