    James Traficant Early Life

    James Traficant was born in Youngstown, Ohio to a working-class Catholic family with Italian and Hungarian ancestry. He graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School and went on to receive a B.S. in education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1963. Traficant was a football player during his time at Pitt, where he played as a quarterback and had teammates like Mike Ditka.

    In 1963, Traficant was picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL’s twentieth-round draft. He attempted out for both the Steelers and the Oakland Raiders but did not play professionally. He earned a Master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1973 and later obtained another Master’s degree in counseling from Youngstown State University in 1976.

    Before entering politics, Traficant served as the consumer finance director for the Youngstown Community Action Program. He also worked as an instructor, teaching courses on drug and alcohol dependency and recovery at Youngstown State University and Kent State University. Traficant was also invited to lecture on the topic of drug and alcohol abuse for various colleges and government agencies outside Ohio. Moreover, he was a faculty member at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy.

    He was the executive director of the Mahoning County Drug Program from 1971 to 1981, and Sheriff of Mahoning County from 1981 to 1985. While serving as sheriff, Traficant made national headlines by refusing to execute foreclosure orders on several unemployed homeowners. This endeared him to the local population, which was dealing with a declining economy following the closures and relocations of steel-making and steel-associated businesses.
