As the National Hunt racing season gradually yields to the eagerly anticipated flat racing calendar, enthusiasts and punters alike turn their attention to one of the most prestigious events in the horse racing world — the Epsom Derby.

The Epsom Derby, often dubbed the “Greatest Flat Race in the World,” is steeped in history and tradition.

Held annually at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, this Group 1 flat race is for three-year-olds and is renowned for its challenging track and demanding distance of one mile, four furlongs, and six yards.

Winning the Derby is a dream cherished by breeders, trainers, jockeys, and owners alike, with victory securing a horse’s place in the annals of racing history.

With just a couple of months remaining before the event, the ante-post markets on sports betting sites are already buzzing with speculation and excitement about the potential contenders for this illustrious race.

These contenders boast impressive pedigrees, promising performances, and the potential to etch their names in Derby folklore. Let’s take a closer look at some of the frontrunners shaping up for the 2024 Epsom Derby

    The Ballydoyle Brigade

Aidan O’Brien, the master trainer at Ballydoyle Stables in County Tipperary, perennially fields a formidable contingent for the Epsom Derby, and this year is no exception.

Auguste Rodin secured him his ninth Derby in 2023, and one of the standout prospects from his yard this year is likely to be City Of Troy, who is the current favourite.

The colt is out of Justify and Together Forever, giving him a pedigree that exudes class and stamina in abundance.

With O’Brien’s expertise and the backing of powerhouse owners Coolmore Stud, City Of Troy is poised to make a serious challenge for Derby glory.

However, stablemates Henry Longfellow, Diego Velazquez, and Los Angeles are all prominent in the betting and could prove to be formidable opposition.

    The Godolphin group

The global racing giant Godolphin is never one to be overlooked when it comes to the major races on the flat racing calendar, especially the Epsom Derby.

Charlie Appleby has won the prestigious contest twice since 2018, and this year, all eyes are on Ancient Wisdom and Arabian Crown, who are both 12/1 shots in the betting.

The former is a strapping colt out of Dubawi and Golden Valentine who has won four of his five races under rules, including a Group 1, while Arabian Crown is also sired by Dubawi but out of Dubai Rose, and won a Group 2 at Newmarket in October.

With the know-how of the renowned Appleby and carrying the famous royal blue silks of Godolphin, either of these colts could possess the raw talent and tenacity required to conquer the demands of the Epsom Downs.

    Dark horses and surprise packages

While the early favourites garner much of the spotlight, the Epsom Derby is also renowned for its capacity to spring surprises and unearth hidden gems.

From emerging talents to overlooked contenders, the ante-post market is rife with speculation about potential dark horses who could upset the established order and stake their claim to Derby glory.

One of those could be Ghostwriter, who is three for three for Clive Cox, including winning the Group 2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket in September.
