Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was born on 6th July 1901 in Calcutta, Bengal Presidency in British India, which is present-day’s Kolkata City in the West Bengal State of India.

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s Death

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee died on 23rd June 1953, aged 51, in a hospital after a day he got a heart attack while being in the custody of the Jammu and Kashmir police for allegedly entering Kashmir on 11th May 1953.

His death was claimed as a conspiracy by many and in 2011, BJP called for an inquiry to investigate his death.

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee belonged to a Bengali Hindu family. His father was Ashutosh Mukherjee who was a well-known Bengali barrister and educator. His mother’s name was Jogamaya Devi Mukherjee.

He had three brothers, an elder brother named “Rama Prasad Mukherjee” born in 1896, and two younger brothers named “Uma Prasad Mukherjee” born in 1902, and “Bama Prasad Mukherjee” born in 1906.

He also had three sisters, an elder sister named “Kamala” born in 1895, and two younger sisters named “Amala” born in 1905, and “Ramala” born in 1908.

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was married to Sudha Devi in 1922 and had five children with her.

Their youngest son died of diphtheria and shortly after that, his wife also passed away from double pneumonia.

The couple has two sons named “Anutosh” and “Debatosh” and two daughters, named “Sabita” and “Arati”.

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Career

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee started his career as a barrister in 1926 after returning from England. He was the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta at the age of 33.

Mukherjee was the one who didn’t let Bengal and Punjab be included in Pakistan as proposed by the British Government.

He held the position of the Minister of Industry and Supply post the independence of India. However, due to his differences with other leaders, he resigned from his post and joined the RSS later.

He then founded the “Bharatiya Jana Sangh” along with the RSS supporters. He also worked in the direction of including Jammu and Kashmir a part of India during which he was arrested and imprisoned in Kashmir where he died later.

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee finished his school education at Mitra Institution in Kolkata. Later, he went to the Presidency College in Kolkata from where he earned his B.A., M.A., LLB, and D.Litt degrees.

He also went to Lincoln’s Inn in London, England, U.K., and completed his Barrister-at-Law.
